How We Keep Kids Safe and Healthy During Summer

Summer is when kids have the time to play, explore, and just be kids. With all that running around in the heat, it helps to take a few extra steps to make sure they’re safe. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind, along with how our summer camp program is designed to handle the heat so your child stays healthy and happy.

1. Drink Water, Even When Not Thirsty

Kids get busy playing and forget to drink water. By the time they feel thirsty, they’re already a bit dry. We make sure kids take water breaks throughout the day at camp, even if they say they’re not thirsty.

At our camp: We have scheduled hydration breaks and always keep cold water available. Send your child with a refillable water bottle every day.

2. Wear the Right Clothes

Light cotton clothes that are loose and breathable work best in the heat. A cap helps too. Bright colours also make it easier to spot kids in a group.

At our camp: Outdoor play is supervised, and we encourage parents to dress kids in comfortable cotton wear. Want to know what to pack? [Get the full camp prep guide here.]

3. Plan Outdoor Time Carefully

The sun is harsh between 10 AM and 4 PM. It’s best to be indoors or in the shade during those hours.

At our camp: We plan outdoor activities in the morning and late afternoon. During peak heat, we shift to shaded areas or indoor spaces. [See our daily schedule to understand how we balance sun exposure and fun.]

4. Use Sunscreen the Right Way

Sunscreen needs to be applied 20 minutes before going out and reapplied every two hours, especially if kids are sweating or playing in water.

At our camp: We remind kids to reapply sunscreen, but we need your help with the first application at home. Check our registration form for a complete list of things to apply before drop-off.

5. Eat Light and Cool Foods

Heavy, fried foods can make kids feel sluggish in the heat. Fruits like watermelon and oranges, along with curd and light meals, work better.

At our camp: Snacks are planned to be light and refreshing. If your child has specific food preferences or allergies, let us know when you register.

6. Guard Against Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Using a good repellent and covering up helps.

At our camp: Our outdoor areas are maintained to prevent mosquitoes, and we use safe repellents when needed. Add this to your checklist when dropping off your child.

7. Keep Hands Clean

More outdoor time means more dirt. Handwashing before eating is a simple way to avoid infections.

At our camp: We make handwashing part of the routine before every meal and snack. It’s one of those small things that makes a big difference.

8. Watch for Signs of Overheating

If a child feels tired, cranky, or has a headache in the heat, they may need to cool down immediately.

At our camp: Our staff is trained to spot early signs of heat discomfort. We have cool, shaded areas for rest and make sure kids drink water. If you want to know more about how we handle summer safety.

Summer should be about fun, not worrying about health. Our camp is set up to give kids the freedom to play while we quietly handle the safety part. If you’re looking for a place where your child can spend the summer active and well-cared for, we’d love to tell you more.
